Burglaries of Home
Burglaries often occur in the daytime and are often committed by juveniles. Some burglars will dress to suit the neighborhood. Daylight burglars like rainy or stormy days. The home with no outside lighting at night or with easy access is be burglarized.
Lock doors and windows.
Install new locks in a home or apartment when moving in.
Never leave an extra key to the house in the mailbox, under doormats, over door frames, or anywhere else.
Do not give your key to anyone.
Install a small "peephole" in your doors.
Ask for proper identification from salesmen, solicitors, repairmen, or utility companies.
Light all sides of the house and garage.
Leave a bathroom light and another light on when not at home. Use automatic timers when gone for extended periods of time.
Use dead bolt locks that require a key and chain locks.
Do not leave ladders outside.
Keep shrubbery trimmed to prevent hiding places.
Teach children not to open the door for strangers.
Keep doors locked even when home.
Windows with air conditioners are a favorite entry place. Nail or screw the window in place.
Do not pull curtains or blinds.
Do not install a "doggie door".
Do not leave a note announcing your absence and when you will return.
Cancel deliveries of newspaper and mail when out of town.
Investigate barking dogs late at night.
For extended absences, notify the police department of departure date and return date.
Protecting Your Car
Have grass mowed or snow shoveled.
Always lock car doors and roll up windows.
Put valuables in the trunk.
Beware of hitchhikers.
Keep your driver's license and registration with you.
Park in lighted areas.
Install an alarm.
Never leave children unattended in a car.
Check the back seat before getting in.
Pull over in a well-lit area.
Never carry large amounts of cash.
Never resist an armed robber.
Keep a good hold of pocketbooks.
Don't put your pocketbook in a shopping cart.
Be alert for pickpockets.
Take courses on self-defense.
Sign all credit cards.
Keep a list of all credit cards, their numbers and the name and address of the issuing company.
Promptly report stolen credit cards.
Destroy canceled credit cards immediately.
Warn children never to go anywhere with strangers.
Know where your children are at all times.
Report suspicious gifts.
Tell a child to stay away from a driver who stops and asks for directions.
Have children stay in groups.
Teach children what to do in an emergency.
Do not smoke in bed or allow small children to play with matches or lighters.
Store all flammable liquids in secure containers.
Do not plug too many plugs into one outlet.
Keep guns locked in a cabinet or security closet.
Keep a complete list of guns, their serials numbers, and other identifying data to aid in their return if stolen.
